I was 23 and teaching high school PE when I was diagnosed with MS.

Back then, I knew exactly who I was. I was a PE teacher. I ran, jumped, square danced, did somersaults and taught my classes standing up.

Then MS started whispering: NO, you can’t do that anymore.

For years, I wanted the old Patti back. Eventually, I realized she wasn’t coming back.

I was still Patti. Just a different version.

Before MS, I was a good person and I liked myself. Today, I am a GREAT person and I love who I am because I live with MS.

Not because MS has been wonderful. It hasn’t.

Because MS helped me realize there was more to who I was.

That’s the conversation I want to have now. What happens when life changes? When NO shows up? When the person you thought you were doesn’t quite fit anymore?

I don’t have a five-step formula. I have lived experience, a lot of stories and a lot of NOs.

NO didn’t end my story.

It handed me a pen and challenged me to write a different one.

And I’m still writing it.
