I was 23 and teaching high school PE when I was diagnosed with MS.
Back then, I knew exactly who I was. I was a PE teacher. I ran, jumped, square danced, did somersaults and taught my classes standing up.
Then MS started whispering: NO, you can’t do that anymore.
For years, I wanted the old Patti back. Eventually, I realized she wasn’t coming back.
I was still Patti. Just a different version.
Before MS, I was a good person and I liked myself. Today, I am a GREAT person and I love who I am because I live with MS.
Not because MS has been wonderful. It hasn’t.
Because MS helped me realize there was more to who I was.
That’s the conversation I want to have now. What happens when life changes? When NO shows up? When the person you thought you were doesn’t quite fit anymore?
I don’t have a five-step formula. I have lived experience, a lot of stories and a lot of NOs.
NO didn’t end my story.
It handed me a pen and challenged me to write a different one.
And I’m still writing it.
When life changes, it can mess with more than your plans. It can mess with how you see yourself. I know what it feels like to wake up one day and realize the version of you that used to make sense doesn’t quite fit anymore. This is a real conversation about that messy middle. The anger. The confusion. The loss of independence. The pressure to “move forward” when you’re still trying to figure out who you are now. I’m not here to fix you or give you a perfect five-step plan.
