Apps, workflows or factory floors: These are all systems. I'll help you plan it right before you build it.

I spent 30 years at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Division of Extension, 25 of them as IT director. I led the planning, design and delivery of the systems a statewide organization depended on, from infrastructure and applications to the processes that connected them. Along the way I learned that most projects go wrong before the work starts, because the team begins with a solution instead of a purpose.

After my career, I decided to put that knowledge and experience to work by writing Plan It on Purpose: A Systems Planning and Design Workbook, built on industrial engineer Gerald Nadler’s purpose-first planning. Through Every Expert, I offer guidance on that same method. Teams agree on what a system is for, set measures of success before choosing a solution, and build in sponsor approvals so there are no late surprises.

I also own Tech -n- Wood, a studio that makes custom bent white oak furniture and display pieces.

Overview of the Eight-Step Process

A full hour walking through all eight steps of my planning process, from defining the purpose to maintaining the finished system. We apply the process to your own project or system, so you see where it will need the most attention and how to involve your team and sponsor. A good choice if you want a clear roadmap before planning on your own or booking step sessions. The workbook is optional for this session: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0HMJGDQH7

Getting Started: Team, Stakeholders and Communication Plan

The groundwork before Step 1. We choose your planning team, identify everyone the system affects, and agree on how the team will work, including who approves each step and how fast. Then we build the communication plan you will use at every step, so stakeholders stay informed and nobody is surprised. Bring your copy of Plan It on Purpose; we use Worksheets 2.1 to 2.3 in Chapter 2. Workbook: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0HMJGDQH7
